6–12 mm Natural Sand Filter Media
Natural sand with a grain size of 6–12 mm is commonly used as a support gravel layer in multi-media filtration systems. Positioned at the bottommost layer of the filter bed, this coarse material provides structural integrity, ensures efficient drainage, and prevents migration of finer media like sand and anthracite during filtration and backwash cycles. It is valued for its uniformity, mechanical strength, and inert nature, making it ideal for use in both industrial and municipal water treatment applications.
Grain Size: 6–12 mm
Designed to act as a strong foundational support in filter beds.Specific Gravity: ~2.6 g/cm³
Ensures excellent settling behavior and maintains bed stability under high flow.Effective Size (D10): Typically 6.2 to 10 mm
Offers consistent drainage and supports even flow distribution.Uniformity Coefficient (UC): ≤ 1.7
Promotes stable packing and prevents channeling.Composition: Primarily silica-rich quartz gravel, naturally screened and washed.
Bottom Gravel Layer in Multi-media Filters
Provides a stable base and supports overlying media like 2–4 mm sand or anthracite.Rapid Gravity Filters & Pressure Filters
Helps prevent media loss during high-velocity filtration and backwash.Wastewater Treatment Plants (ETPs/STPs)
Supports complex treatment processes and withstands biological loads.Desalination Pre-treatment Filters
Acts as a stable gravel layer for pre-filtration in RO and seawater systems.
✅ Excellent Mechanical Support – Enhances bed structure and longevity.
✅ High Flow-through Capability – Ensures efficient drainage and reduced pressure loss.
✅ Prevents Media Migration – Critical in layered filtration beds.
✅ Non-toxic & Chemically Stable – Maintains consistent water chemistry.
✅ Low Maintenance – Withstands frequent backwashing and flow surges.
Recommended as the bottommost layer in multi-media filtration beds.
Bed thickness typically ranges from 150 to 300 mm depending on design.
Layered beneath finer media such as 4–6 mm or 2–4 mm sand and anthracite.
Ensure uniform grading and pre-washing before installation to prevent turbidity.
